Sikkim in October: How to Plan, Plus the Dos and Don’ts

Sikkim in October is one of the best windows of the year. The monsoon has cleared, the skies turn sharp, and Khangchendzonga (Kanchenjunga) shows itself on most mornings. North Sikkim reopened to tourists in September 2026 after nearly three years, so Lachen, Lachung and Gurudongmar are back this season.

What is the weather like in Sikkim in October?

October gives Sikkim its clearest, driest spell. Gangtok sits at about 1,650 m and runs around 22 degrees Celsius by day and 9 degrees Celsius at night through the month. It gets colder with height. Lachen and Lachung fall close to freezing after dark, and the high points stay cold even in the sun.

The monsoon usually withdraws in the first week, so late October is drier and clearer than the start. Early October can still throw a wet morning, which matters on NH10 and on the north roads. Build a buffer day and pack real layers.

Is North Sikkim open in October 2026?

Yes, and this is the season’s big change. Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang Valley, Zero Point and Gurudongmar Lake reopened to tourists after nearly three years, with permits for Lachen and Gurudongmar issued from 11 September 2026. The 2023 Teesta flood had cut this corridor.

Plan around one hard rule. The Mangan administration requires tourist vehicles to cross the Toong (Tung) check post by 4 pm, so Lachen and Lachung runs start early. For Gurudongmar you leave Lachen before 7 am and stay at the lake for about thirty minutes. Access can still shift, so confirm the day’s road status with your operator.

Do I need a permit for Sikkim in October?

The answer depends on your passport, so treat the two permits separately.

Indian citizens need no permit to enter Sikkim. You do need a Protected Area Permit for Tsomgo (Changu) Lake and Baba Mandir, for Nathu La, and for all of North Sikkim. For North Sikkim and Nathu La that permit is arranged only through a registered Sikkim travel agent, not over a counter, so a walk-in traveller cannot get one alone. Carry voter ID, passport or driving licence; Aadhaar is not accepted for Gurudongmar.

Foreign nationals need an entry permit to enter Sikkim at all. It is the Inner Line Permit, also issued as a Restricted Area Permit, and it is free, valid for 30 days, and given at the Rangpo or Melli check posts or at Sikkim Tourism offices in Delhi, Kolkata, Siliguri and Darjeeling against your passport and Indian visa. You must travel with at least one other foreign national and a registered guide, and some places are closed to foreigners entirely.

Where can you go, how high is it, and who gets in?

Place Altitude Permit Open to From Gangtok
Tsomgo (Changu) Lake about 3,753 m Protected Area Permit Indians, and foreigners with a guide about 2 hr
Nathu La 4,310 m Protected Area Permit, agent-arranged Indian citizens only; Wed to Sun about 2.5 hr
Yumthang Valley about 3,564 m Protected Area Permit, agent-arranged Indians; foreigners up to here only full day via Lachung
Zero Point (Yumesamdong) about 4,660 m Protected Area Permit, agent-arranged Indian citizens only beyond Yumthang
Gurudongmar Lake 5,430 m Protected Area Permit, agent-arranged Indian citizens only from Lachen, pre-dawn start

Which festivals fall in Sikkim in October?

The big one is Dashain, the Nepali form of Durga Puja, with Vijaya Dashami around 20 to 21 October 2026. Offices shut, families travel, and this is exactly when domestic crowds and room rates peak in Gangtok, so book ahead. Tihar, the Diwali period, follows in early November, just outside the month. In the monasteries, watch for Lhabab Duchen, a Buddhist observance that lands in the late October to November window and moves each year with the Tibetan calendar.

How do I reach Sikkim, and is the road reliable in October?

The usual gateways are Bagdogra airport (IXB) and New Jalpaiguri railway station (NJP), both near Siliguri, followed by a four to five hour drive to Gangtok on NH10 along the Teesta. Pakyong airport (PYG) near Gangtok has had on and off scheduled service, so check current flights before you count on it.

NH10 is landslide-prone in the monsoon. By mid-October it has usually settled, but an early-month spell of rain can still shut it for a few hours. Keep the first and last day of your trip flexible.

Dos and don’ts for an October trip

Do:

  • Book North Sikkim and Nathu La through a registered Sikkim agent before you travel. These permits cannot be arranged on your own.
  • Spend a night at Lachen before Gurudongmar. Going to 5,430 m and back to Gangtok in one day is how people get into trouble.
  • Keep one or two buffer days. A single wet morning can push a high run by a day.
  • Carry cash. ATMs and card machines thin out beyond Gangtok and all but vanish in the north.

Don’t:

  • Do not plan a foreign-passport trip around Gurudongmar, Zero Point or Nathu La. These are closed to foreign nationals.
  • Do not leave Gangtok late for Lachen or Lachung. The Toong check post stops tourist movement by 4 pm.
  • Do not treat altitude lightly. Anyone with a heart or respiratory condition should speak to a doctor before booking a high leg, and your operator can advise on pacing.
  • Do not expect snow. October is clear and crisp; the snow comes later in the year.

FAQ

Is October a good time to visit Sikkim?

Yes, it is among the best. Post-monsoon air gives the clearest mountain views of the year, days are mild and the high roads are open. The catch is heavier crowds and higher room rates around the Dashain holidays, so book early and keep your first day flexible for any leftover monsoon rain.

Is North Sikkim open in October 2026?

Yes. Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang Valley, Zero Point and Gurudongmar reopened to tourists after nearly three years, with permits issued from 11 September 2026. Vehicles must clear the Toong check post by 4 pm, and Gurudongmar runs leave Lachen before dawn. Confirm the day’s road status with your operator, as conditions still shift.

Do foreign nationals need a permit for Sikkim?

Yes. Every foreign national needs an entry permit, the Inner Line Permit, also issued as a Restricted Area Permit, to enter Sikkim. It is free and valid for 30 days, given at the Rangpo or Melli check posts or at Sikkim Tourism offices against a passport and Indian visa. Foreigners must travel in a group with a registered guide.

Can foreigners visit Gurudongmar and Nathu La?

No. Gurudongmar Lake, Zero Point and Nathu La are closed to foreign nationals because they sit close to the border. Indian citizens can visit all three with a Protected Area Permit arranged through a registered agent. Foreign nationals can still see Tsomgo Lake and reach Yumthang Valley, but not beyond it.

How cold does Sikkim get in October?

Gangtok stays comfortable, roughly 22 degrees C by day and 9 degrees C at night. It gets colder with height. Lachen and Lachung fall near freezing after dark, and Gurudongmar at 5,430 m can sit below zero with a hard wind even in daytime. Pack warm layers, a windproof outer and gloves for the high days.

Can I get the North Sikkim permit myself?

No. The Protected Area Permit for North Sikkim and Nathu La is issued only through registered Sikkim travel agents, not to walk-in travellers, and needs a fixed itinerary and vehicle details. Hand your ID to your operator a day ahead. Indians should carry voter ID, passport or driving licence, as Aadhaar is not accepted for Gurudongmar.
