Cairns is a city in Cairns County, Queensland, Australian. Cairns is located in the far North area of Queensland. Cairns is thought of as the Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Cairns has a tropical climate, it is known for hot, humid summers and fairly mild winters. If you are headed to Queensland, Australia for leisure you’ll find there are many things to do in Cairns.

Going to Cairns

If you are flying in to Cairns then you will probably fly in to Cairns Airport. Cairns Airport is an international airport and is the 7th busiest airport in Australia. Cairns Airport has direct flights to 18 international airports and 30 domestic. Taxis and airport shuttles/buses are available for travel to and from the airport.

One of the first things to take in to account if you are going to Cairns or Australia in general, is if you aren’t from there is that the seasons are opposite the Northern Hemisphere. This means that while it’s summer in the northern hemisphere it will be winter in the southern hemisphere. It is definitely important to know the weather differences with the seasons.
Places to Shop
Cairns Central is the largest shopping center in Far North Queensland. It houses over 180 stores, has a Justice of the Peace and provides free Wi-Fi service. There is also a service called Cairns Central Resident Stylist that will help customers choose just one outfit or an entire wardrobe; this service is available for a fee.
Stockland Cairns offers a casual shopping experience with a community feel. There are many clothing stores, a movie theater and restaurants to eat at. Stockland Cairns also has a Justice of the Peace and Ticketek service for buying tickets to different big events.
The Pier Cairns is a shopping center that is more of a boutique shopping experience. The Pier has Art Exhibits, offers dance lessons and there is a Mobile Planetarium. The Pier restaurants offer cuisine from Sushi, to seafood, to different casual eats.
Places To Go in Cairns
See The Great Barrier Reef, which is the world’s largest coral reef system and it is one of the 7 wonders of the natural world. There are over 3000 different reef systems and coral cays to view within the Reef. You can experience The Reef by glass bottom boat, snorkeling or even by the air in a plane or helicopter. There are 100s of islands connected to the Great Barrier Reef that you can visit and experience the beauty of.
Visit the Daintree Rain Forest which is an area of 1200 square kilometers and happens to be the largest tropical rainforest in Australia. You have the option of either taking a Four Wheel day trip through the rainforest or book overnight accommodations and stay in the rainforest for several days. Within the rainforest you will experience many exotic plants and animals, beautiful beaches, the Daintree River and the Cape Trip Exotic Fruit Farm.
Visit the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park showcases the Djabugay people who are Aboriginal people with a culture that stretches over 40,000 years. The Djabugay People have been sharing their culture with visitors for the past 28 years and Tjapukai is the largest indigenous employer within Australia.
